What is a Video File Format?
A Video File Format is a type of file format for storing digital video. There are many types, all of which have different File Extensions/Containers and Codecs. (see below)
What is a File Extension?
A file extension is a suffix at the end of a file’s name, preceded by a period (.). For example, if you have a video file titled MyVideo.mp4, the file extension is .mp4.
File extensions are used by operating systems, such as Windows, iOS and Linux, to associate the file with specific applications. Sometimes, file extensions may be hidden by default in the operating system, but this can be changed in settings.
What is a Video Container?
A container is like a box that contains the video, audio and metadata, and is usually identified by its file extension. For example, an h.264 video can be stored in either a .mp4 or .mov container.
What is a Codec?
A codec is a type of software that compresses video for easy storage and playback. They are used by video apps and cameras to compress the footage and also to decode the compression for playback or editing, hence the name, codec, meaning code-decode.
The most common type of video codec in 2021 is h.264, which is used by many video cameras and online services, such as YouTube and TikTok, for its ability to maintain high quality at lower file sizes.
What File Format does Kamua use to render video?
All Kamua ouputs are rendered using h.264 and the .mp4 file extension, at the same quality as the highest quality source media used.
